ÍSOR is an independent governmental institution under the Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Climate, operating on a commercial basis in a competitive market. ÍSOR is one of the largest and most prominent companies in the world in the field of geothermal research and geoscience services, enjoying international recognition as such. Additionally, ÍSOR has been a leader in Iceland in researching the geological structure of the ocean floor surrounding the country.

For nearly 80 years, ÍSOR and its predecessors have been among the leading entities in the development of technologies that have made Iceland one of the foremost nations in geothermal utilization, providing Icelanders with energy at a much lower cost than would have been possible with other energy sources. ÍSOR conducts various interdisciplinary research and offers services and consultancy in the fields of geothermal energy and geoscience, as well as providing education in geothermal studies.

ÍSOR’s headquarters are located in Kópavogur, with a branch in Akureyri.
